I first heard Justin Townes Earle at Golden Plains 2011:
He is the token blues n roots act of the festival and quickly becomes a surprise crowd favourite. Excellent banter, great accent, delightful stories. He is cool as fuck and gets some golden boot nominations from the enthusiastic crowd. Then he takes his shirt off. Hurrah!

In town for Bluesfest, I saw Justin Townes Earle last week on Wednesday 4 April 2012 at the Factory in Marrickville. His music style is bluegrass, folk and country. He’s a brilliant songwriter, his stories seem to come to life in his songs. He has an excellent stage prescence that quickly captivates the audience.
He, along with a band, played quite a few songs from his new album “Nothing’s Gonna Change The Way You Feel About Me Now”. Having not heard much of the new album I enjoyed hearing many of the new songs for the first time. For the last part of the performance the band left the stage. This is when he returned to the Justin we had seen at Golden Plains. The witty banter started to flow and he played older songs. With just him and a guitar it seemed more raw, allowing the audience to focus more on the beautiful words.
The highlights of the show came with a devastating Mama’s Eyes, a song that never fails to move an audience and reduce a room to silence. He followed that with his cover of The Replacements Can’t Hardly Wait that similarly had a unique power, lifting the mood of the crowd and carrying that feeling through to the end of the set. There were also covers of Gram Parsons and Rex’s Blues from his partial namesake Townes Van Zandt showing that he isn’t afraid to namecheck and honour his influences.
